Joint International Workshop on Off-Site Gamma Dose Rate and Ground Contamination Measurements

Description: Workshop hosted by the Freiburg Materials Research Centre. The sessiosn will focus on measurement technology and data anlysis for fixed gamma probes and mobile systems. Topics include new detector materials and methodologies for dose rate monitoring, gamma spectrometry, quality assurance, intercalibration measurements, and data integrationg. Description: Phantom measurements of brachytherapy sources in hospital
Using a PMMA phantom designed to mimic the brachytherapy implant template, an experiment involving 20 active I-125 sources was conducted at St George Cancer Care Centre, Sydney, Australia to test the application of Timepix detectors in the BrachyView pinhole system. This work was done in conjunction with a supervisor and masters student from CMRP, UOW.

Description: Prostate phantom soft tissue diagnostic imaging
Using a medical phantom designed for use in ultrasound training, the applicability of Timepix was evaluated for soft tissue diagnostic imaging. While the Timepix has been successfully applied for identifying plastic and acrylic materials of similar electron density, it has not yet been tested for use in human tissue imaging - perfectly suited for use in BrachyView for example.
This work was done with the assistance of a Czech undergraduate student from the bio-medical school.

Assisting with calibration and assembly work for multiple Timepix detectors designed for mixed field dosimetry at the ATLAS detector (with particular attention towards neutron detection). Done in partnership with and under supervision by Ivan Caicedo (ESR 7).

Ongoing data analysis of brachytherapy source localisation data as obtained in experimental cooperation with St George Cancer Care Centre. Some errors in reconstructed data require re-optimisation.

Pinhole characterisation and optimisation utilising Monte Carlo simulations of realistic brachytherapy scenarios. Able to test the use of lead collimators and geometric parameters of the pinholes. Still ongoing.
Business and Administration Training

A training course on Business and Administration (BA) consisting of three modules: Technology Transfer, Project Management and Entrepreneurship. The first module was given by CERN Knowledge and Technology Transfer group, the second by STS SAUTER Training and Simulation s.a., the third by the Said Business School at Oxford, UK. Discussions were also held to plan out a business-based internship/secondment in early 2015.

Attended the IEEE conference as a delegate. No papers presented, but training session held.

Short course: Image Quality in Adaptive and Multimodality Imaging
One day short course presented by the University of Arizona and the Center for Gamma-ray Imaging. Topics covered included an overview of multimodality imaging systems, data-analysis methods and computational requirements, as well as comparison between hardware designs.

Business and Administration Training Secondment: January 19-February 13
Four week internship working with IBA Dosimetry at their USA Memphis office. The with IBA dosimetry primarily consisted of working with Christine Zollbrecht, the Operations and Business Intelligence Manager in the US. It provided insight into the logistics and operational processes involved in running an international medical physics organization, particularly with customers between Germany and the US. Tasks included global sales data analysis, database management, and customer engagement. I was also able to attend some field service engineering trips, as well as software demonstrations with local hospitals in Tennessee.

Experimental Work
BrachyView Timepix detectors
New quad detector prototype assembled and characterised. Utilises 4x300um thick Si sensors bonded in a gapless design to maximise imaging surface area and placed on an aluminium heat sink. Experiments planned for HDR and LDR brachytherapy applications in conjunction with CMRP, UOW and St George Cancer Care Centre (Sydney, Australia).

4th Annual ARDENT Workshop: June 22-26
Hosted by IEAP at Masarykova Kolej, the final ARDENT workshop was attended by 45 delegates. The first day and a half was committed to ESR presentations followed by a two day training workshop on neutron dosimetry and radiobiology. The final day included a tour of the Nuclear Physics Institute about one hour outside of Prague. The tour covered research reactors, accelerators, and radiopharmaceutic labs. Outreach
Organised visit of 11 visitors from a local high school in Wollongong, Australia to experience international scientific research. The group consisted of 8 Year 11 students, 2 teachers, and 1 science education student from UOW. They were hosted by ARDENT and the trip included a visit to CERN in Geneva, the city of Bern, and finally a trip to Prague for the 4th Annual ARDENT Workshop. A cultural exchange program was held between the Australian students and a small group from Botičská Gymnázium. From Scientist to CSO: Experiencing the Scientific Method as your Guide to Career Success
Date: 26 October - 7 December, 2015

This training course was hosted at the New York Academy of Sciences and run by SciPHD, an organisation that prepares scientists for professional careers. Topics covered invlude project management, team leadership, the science of science vs the business of science, and finance training.
Networking events allowed me to establish contacts with researchers from institutions such as Cornell University, Memorial Sloan-Kettering, Columbia University and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. I visited a research lab at Columbia as well as the medical physics centre at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC).

Visit to home institution for updates on BrachyView project with principal supervisor Prof. Anatoly Rosenfeld, and co-supervisor Dr Marco Petasecca. Meetings with collaborator PhD student Saree Alnaghy to discuss experimental results and future plans.

From Scientist to CSO: Experiencing the Scientific Method as your Guide to Career Success
Date: 26 October - 7 December, 2015
Venue:NYAS, New York
This training course was hosted at the New York Academy of Sciences and run by SciPHD, an organisation that prepares scientists for professional careers. Topics covered invlude project management, team leadership, the science of science vs the business of science, and finance training.
Networking events allowed me to establish contacts with researchers from institutions such as Cornell University, Memorial Sloan-Kettering, Columbia University and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. I visited a research lab at Columbia as well as the medical physics centre at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC).
