IEEE 2015 NPSS Paul Phelps Continuing Education Grant

Congratulations to ARDENT ESR Stuart George (ESR 4) , who was selected to receive a 2015 IEEE NPSS Paul Phelps Continuing Education Grant. The amount of this grant is up to USD 750.
The purpose of the Phelps Grant is for continuing education so the intent is to use the grant to take a short course at the upcoming IEEE NSS-MIC in San Diego (see the "Conferences"' webpage for more info on the next IEEE Conference).

ARDENT ESR Michele Togno (ESR 11) participated to the 54th Annual Conference of the Particle Therapy Co-Operative Group. PTCOG is the largest conference on particle therapy worldwide. The Educational Session provided a comprehensive overview of the clinical, physical, technological, and radiobiological fundamentals of particle beam therapy with an emphasis on the latest advances in the field. The Scientific Meeting focused on advances in IMPT and carbon, robustness in treatment planning, quantifying and managing the uncertainty in range and tumor motion, incorporating 3-D imaging with daily delivery, and various other topics.

ARDENT ESR Michele Togno (ESR 11) participated to the Physics Biennial Meeting which was held at the ESTRO conference. It covered many medical physics domains. The Conference covers state-of-the-art scientific and technological advances on semiconductor-based radiation detector systems and associated electronics for application in bio-medical, material science, high energy physics and astrophysics fields.
ARDENT ESR Francesca Bisello gave a talk titled " Development of silicon monolithic arrays for dosimetry in external beam radiotherapy" summarizing the status of the collaboration between IBA Dosimetry and University of Florence in the development of detectors solution for quality assurance in external beam radiotherapy. The dosimetric characterization of the detectors with MV photons and protons beam have been presented.

AAPM Conference

The AAPM conference featured the latest research in the physics of medical imaging and radiation therapy, including a major focus on the increasing integration on advanced imaging technologies in the guidance of medical therapeutics.
ARDENT ESR Michele Togno presented the latest results in the characterization of a new ionization chamber technology, which is suitable to build detectors for quality assurance in external beam radiotherapy.
Such a technology would be particularly valuable in association with advanced treatment modalities such as rotational radiotherapy, stereotactic treatments (even with unflattened beam qualities) and proton therapy.

International Workshop on Radiation Imaging Detectors (iWoRID)

ARDENT ESR Erik Fröjdh presented the latest results on Timepix3 on the International Workshop on Radiation Imaging Detectors (iWoRID). The Timepix3 represents a significant development in hybrid pixel detectors introducing a zero suppressed data driven mode and simultaneous energy and time measurements with a precision down to 1.5ns. The talk outlined the current status of the work with Timepix3 and presented figures for energy resolution, threshold spread and gain dispersion.

International Workshop on Position Sensitive Neutron Detectors

The Position Sensitive Neutron Detectors (PSND) 2014 workshop was strongly focused on the shortage of He-3 used in active neutron detectors for various applications of radiation protection and high energy physics. Several new technologies based on innovative materials were proposed and the new prototypes developed in different laboratories around the planet were presented. This workshop was a good opportunity to discuss the opportunities as well as challenges of efficient fast neutron detection with world-wide experts currently working in this field. The results from experiments carried out at the CNAO Hadron-therapy facility to characterise the spectrometric capabilities of the CR-39 neutron detector, were presented during this workshop by Alvin Sashala Naik (ESR 13).

Poster by Chris Cassell of CESNEF - Politecnico di Milano presented a technique for distinguishing photons and neutrons in their detector, a neutron REM counter. It shows how the technique works with a simulation and two experimental campaigns, one at the Paul Scherrer Institut in Switzerland and the other at a hospital in Milan (Instituto Nazionale dei Tumori).

NIRS meeting
Chiba, Japan, 21st - 22nd April 2014The purpose of the Annual User Meeting of the National Institute of Radiological Sciences in Chiba, Japan, was to provide an overview of all the research carried out at the Heavy Ion Medical Accelerator in Chiba (HIMAC) for the year 2013. On this poster, the results from the experimental activity performed in July 2013 at HIMAC by the ARDENT ESR Eleni Sagia in collaboration with the Centre for Medical Radiation Physics of the University of Wollongong were included.
